Detective Cormoran Strike is definitely having a difficult time.  After returning from Afghanistan where he lost a portion of his leg to a land mine, he is struggling to make a living as a private investigator.  His on and off relationship seems to be permanently off and now a temp agency has sent him a fill in receptionist that he cannot afford to pay. Then John Bristow walks into his office and things begin to change.  John’s sister was the legendary supermodel Lula Landry who mysteriously fell to her death months ago.  Although the incident was ruled a suicide John refuses to believe it could be true, and he has the money to pay for a proper investigation.  Strike is thrust into the world of high fashion, millionaire beauties, and their troubled rock star boyfriends.  Oddly enough the temp seems to be rather good at investigation and surprising initiative that helps Strike investigate the case.  Galbraith, otherwise known as J. K. Rowling can spin a highly readable tale.  The first in a series, The Cuckoo’s Calling is sure to be a favorite among Rowling’s fans and is likely to gain her many new followers.
