Bear and the Nightingale posted by Robyn

Bear and the Nightingale, debut novel by Katherine Arden, makes the perfect winter read – it is full of magic, spells, and heroic deeds.  It reads much like a Russian folktale, and the reader is promptly introduced to young heroine Vasilisa, the fifth child of a poor family who spends evenings in the small kitchen listening to fairytales by the old nurse Dunya.  The favorite story is about a winter demon named Frost, and the young girl is inexplicably drawn to it.  Vasilisa is strangely gifted, and can see creatures that very few people can.  Her gift is yet a curse, for she finds she must use her special powers to ward off demons and outsmart men in order to save her family.  This is the perfect story to curl up with on a cold night, and cozy up by a warm fire. Its sequel, Girl in the Tower, was recently released, and is book two in the Winternight Trilogy.
