In Every Note Played, a concert pianist’s worst nightmare begins when he is diagnosed with ALS.  Richard is a 45-year-old divorced accomplished pianist who is world renowned.  But when his fingers and hands can no longer perform, he must cancel upcoming performances and accept his illness with its increasing paralysis.  He finds help and home care an unlikely caretaker - his ex-wife Katrina.  She is also a pianist, but gave up her own career years ago for Richard’s and for motherhood.  The couple have many unresolved issues that led to the dissolution of their marriage, yet they put these aside when Katrina takes Richard into her home and again puts her own life on hold.  They have a college age daughter named Grace, who has yet to learn of her estranged father’s disease.   This heart wrenching tale is by Lisa Genova, whose novel Still Alice was made into an academy award winning film.  It is also available in audio.
