In Grief Cottage, Gail Godwin's newest novel, Marcus is an 11-year-old orphan sent to live with his quirky artistic great aunt Charlotte on an island in North Carolina. Marcus’s single mom was killed in a car accident, and after a brief time in foster care, he is trying to make a new life getting to know his relative. At the same time, he is dreading return to school. Charlotte tells him the story of the nearby “grief cottage” on her island. A hurricane 50 years ago resulted in the disappearance and presumed death of the family staying there – parents and a teenage boy. The cabin's history inspired her to begin painting, and Marcus visits it daily, with hopes of discovering answers to the family’s disappearance. This ghost story is also a tale of dealing with grief and loss, as well as the power of family.
