Two Books by Alex Michaelides posted by Robyn

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is told from the viewpoint of Theo Faber, a criminal psychotherapist who has been following the case of Alicia Berenson, known as the “silent patient”.  Alicia was a famous painter who shot and killed her fashion photographer husband six years ago.  She has not spoken a word at the Grove, the psychiatric ward where she has resided since his murder.  When Theo lands a job working at the facility, he is determined to work with notorious Alicia and get her to speak so he can solve the mystery of why she shot her beloved husband.  Theo finds himself in a dual role of therapist and detective, as he investigates by approaching Alicia’s family members, friends, and neighbors.

The Maidens is the newer of the two best-selling novels by Michaelides.  This story features Mariana, a group therapist who helps others while working through her own grief after losing her husband the year before.  She has had more than her share of family tragedy, so when her adopted daughter and niece Zoe calls her in distress from Cambridge University, Mariana makes a quick trip back to her alma mater to console her.  Zoe’s best friend has been found murdered.  Upon further investigation, Mariana learns that the friend was part of an elite and mysterious group known as the Maidens.  This group of female students dote on handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor Edward Fosca.  Mariana suspects something is being kept hidden, and takes the risk of befriending him to the point of going on a date.  When the body of another young woman from the group is discovered, Mariana is determined to prove Fosca’s guilt, despite the fact no one believes her suspicions.  Both titles are available in audio.
