January is the title character of this recently released book. It is early 1900s, and January is a young girl who doesn’t quite fit in – she is of dark complexion and without a mother. Yet she lives in a mansion full of treasures, and is under the care of Mr. Locke, a wealthy man who collects artifacts and employs her father who is usually on the job travelling. January discovers a mysterious blue door standing alone in a field when she is 7. Upon opening the door, she finds a different land on the other side. She is unable to explore it before she is called back. She also spies and picks up a silver coin from the ground, which she pockets and treasures for years to come. On her 17th birthday, January receives a leather bound book called 10,000 Doors. She finds a story that answers questions about her past, as well as a tale with many unusual doors, much like the one she stumbled upon 10 years before. 10,000 Doors of January is a magical and beautifully told debut novel by Alix E. Harrow. It is a book within a book, and is a story about family, love, and finding one’s true self.
