Bridgerton Novels posted by Robyn

The Duke & I is the first book in the Bridgerton romance series by Julia Quinn.  This title inspired the popular Netflix adaptation, where book one is played out in the first season.  Simon Bassett is the Duke of Hastings – he is an only child whose father disowned him due to his childhood stutter. Now an adult and confirmed bachelor, he finds himself in 1800s Regency London society, unable to escape the aristocratic young single women and their overbearing mothers.  His best friend is Anthony Bridgerton, the oldest child in a family of eight children.  When Simon meets Anthony’s younger sister Daphne, she agrees to a fake courtship with him, so that society will leave him alone.  Things don’t go as planned, however.  The story reads like a racy Jane Austen novel - it is wicked, funny and heartfelt with detailed scenes one will not find in Austen!

The Viscount Who Loved Me (book 2) is about eldest sibling Anthony, who has taken on family responsibilities and is more or less looking for a convenient rather than passionate marriage.  Offer From a Gentleman (book 3) features second son and artist Benedict, and resembles the classic fairy tale Cinderella.  Romancing Mr. Bridgerton (book 4) involves the long suffering Bridgerton family friend Penelope Featherington, who has crushed on third son Colin for many years. This novel is most intriguing, where the reader finally learns the identify of local gossip columnist Lady Whistledown (though Netflix viewers find out at end of season one.)  The series of books continues to feature romances of each Bridgerton offspring, as well as their mother Violet.
